In order to prevent linking the user to a playback equipment, we should not link the using right to this hardware. It is a simple idea!

With AWAWAT, the using rights are incorporated into an independant hardware that everyone has: a cell phone.

The mobile phone will serve to manage using rights. It's the cell phone which will authorize or not to read the works on the player. It will provide, on the point, keys and decryption algorithm to the player.

To download your movie:

• You connect to your service provider and identify yourself.
• You download the chosen movie to your USB drive. You can burn it to a CD or DVD if you want.
• The service sends on your phone data necessary to view this movie.

The downloaded movie is not readable directly. To read it, you must have the using rights. These rights are hidden on your mobile phone.

To view the movie:

Simply insert your USB drive or disk containing the data on your compatible driver (PC, DVD player, TNT tuner , ...) and connect it to your phone. It's this one that will allow playback.

• With this principle, you can play your movie on any compatible player.
• You have on your phone all your using rights. You can always download on the Internet the data associated to those rights.
• You do not have to be connected to the Internet to view the movie.

Competitive advantages

A big advantage of using the phone as a rights' manager is that you can include an electronic purse. Then, this allows the payment of the work just before reading, and not before downloading as is the case with DRMs. It can also easily recover the keys and the algorithm required by the wireless connection (even far from Internet, you can retrieve the keys of a multimedia work ). .

AWAWAT has many other advantages

• The reading is not depending on the reading system and can be done on any compatible player (even if the player is Open Source)
• Once the work is downloaded, there is no need to be connected to the Internet to read the work.
• No need to have a fast connection to enjoy VOD ^[1]
• Payment is made at the reading time and not at the downloading time.
• Copyrights are respected.
• The reading system is controlled. This easily allows for offers (free first listen, resuming reading on another player where it stopped, advertising interface to allow free use ...).
• The distribution files can be done by Peer 2 Peer.
• The communication works can be done through blogs, links-type or Podcast feeds.
• Rights' management allows the loan of the work, its purchase or transfer ...

We did a quick comparison of our solution with the various VOD offers (not yet translated): IPTV, download (DRM), Set Up Box, SVOD, FOD.

To another distribution system.

The work does not depend on the player system nor on the provider system. It is encrypted, the rights of use and decryption keys are stored, with the management rights, on the mobile phone. These data can be recovered by the phone just before the use of the work: works can be downloaded without being associated to using rights, this data will be retrieved later.

Now, we will be able to get the works:

• Copying the work: the using rights are on the user's mobile phone, they are not duplicated. The recipient's work will, in turn, fulfill the rights to use the work.
• Downloading data on peer 2 peer. The broadcasting of these files is not forbidden, the keys are kept carefully on the phone. This form of sharing allows everyone to be able to find specific and few broadcasted films . The "torrents" can be placed on blogs without any problem!
• Through the press: newspapers can give free files. The rights of use will be retrieved by the mobile phone prior to use.

To new services

Our phone, as manager of Rights, gives a new type of services: document management.

In collecting our using rights associated to documents, we also store the location on the Internet of the original document. Through this link and access rights to the document, we can work from anywhere and always have our documents with us. Our phone becomes the gateway to our office.

In addition, our service may cancel all access in case of loss or theft of our phone. Our rights and links will be restored to our new phone.
